How To Be Heard Online Using Search Engine Optimization

Have you ever wondered why some websites are so popular and their quality of content is not so unique or helpful sometimes? Or seem to wonder why websites loaded with up-to-date content that is relevant, useful, and practical are not as popular or do not attract as much traffic? Worse still, are you like me who often feel cheated at times when the bloggers who are considered the best are not the ones whose sites you visit the most because they lack audience appeal? Have you ever searched for a document only to find it after scrolling down five pages from the search results? Well, the secret is in search engine optimization.

Search engine optimization is done to ensure a website can be easily accessed and that the particular website appears first when someone is looking for information related to that page.

As a business owner, I am sure you would love for your business to show up for certain keywords when a search is carried out on search engines instead of websites of other business who are either direct or indirect competition. Every product, service, or business has a competition (that might be either ahead or behind you in search engine result pages).

To get ahead of your competition, you must always put search engines into consideration. Search engines provide you with organic traffic – when people enter a search query for a string of keywords, search engines search for content on the internet and immediately delivers relevant and authoritative results based on the search query.

Gaining exposure in search engine results is vital to your business and its website’s performance and that’s where search engine optimization comes to play.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization or SEO, is the process of improving your website in order to gain more exposure in Search Engine Results Page (SERP) and having a better ranking above your competitors. All this really should be for the sole purpose of leading visitors to your website who has found you for the right reasons.

In optimizing your website, it is important to note that decisions should be taken based on what’s best for the visitors of your website. They are the users of the content you are providing and what they do basically is use search engines to find you.

The words “Search engine optimization” doesn’t really mean that it’s all about search engines (even though we want to be visible on SERP), it is also about the users of the content you’re providing as search engines do not make use of such content except for making it visible to the ultimate consumer.

The optimization is done to ensure that a site meets certain criteria required by the search engines on the information it gives which are:

  • use of keywords,
  • page optimization (On page and Off page),
  • site optimization,
  • registering with directories, and
  • link building.

However, these are not the only criteria used to determine visibility, others include: algorithm changes/updates, and search engine optimization abuse techniques (which can lead to penalization).

Like any other business ventured into, you need to spend time learning the tricks of SEO to be good at it. Watch out for the second series as we would look at some of the criteria listed above to improve your website’s SEO value.
